Julia Giese: Parks and Sander

The "American Gothic" by Gordon Parks has noticeable similarities as well as differences from "Cleaning Woman" by August Sander. The photograph taken by Parks depicts a sense of silent anger and apparent discrimination and inequality. While Sander's photograph displays a more depressing atmosphere of a woman with a broom or mop in her hands and a look of defeat on her face. Both photographs exhibit the overworked, underclass and the everyday struggle they must endure to survive.
